Carer Profile 9

Our Area Co-ordinator covering the High Peak South & Dales area has been helping a Carer who has cared for her brother for the past 20 years (he has a brain injury).

Her brother lives independently with his sister (the Carer) been going into his home three/four times a day, helping with washing, cooking, cleaning, changing, toileting, ect.

The Carer had never been informed about respite, our Area Co-ordinator got involved, and through telephone, email and eventually face to face with the community support team, she not only got respite initiated for several weeks but also managed to get Services going in to her brother’s house three times a day, seven days a week.

Unfortunately the Carer has had to endure many years of unhelpful advice and felt at the end of their tether.

This year the Carer has had two weeks holiday with her family for the first time for many years whilst her brother has been in respite. I am continuing to communicate with Social Services with regard to more regular respite or even the Carer’s brother going into Nursing or warden controlled home. Hopefully this will be resolved by the end of the year.
