Carers Pledge

Carers Pledge

A Carer is someone of any age who provides unpaid support to family or friends who could not manage without this help due to illness, disability, mental ill-health or a substance misuse problem. It is in everyone’s interest that carers are supported as they are the largest source of care and support within the UK. There are currently 6.5 million Carers living in the United Kingdom with an estimated 118,000 Carers living in Derbyshire.

Derbyshire Carers Association have facilitated consultations with Carers throughout Derbyshire one key theme was the need for more support to be provided by their GP Practice.

Our Challenge

Since Carers Week 2014 DCA have been urging all GP practices throughout Derbyshire to sign up to the Derbyshire Carers Pledge . There is already some great work in GP practices and this can be shared to support all carers living in Derbyshire to expect the same service regardless of which surgery they are registered with.

In order to care safely and in good health, Carers need information, support, respect and recognition DCA believe that the Carers Pledge help meet this need supporting carers to continue in their caring role.

The Pledge also challenges Hospitals and Employers to recognise Carers and discover more about the support that is available in Derbyshire.

Many Carers start their Caring Journey within a hospital when a loved one has been diagnosed with an illness or disability or admitted for emergency care. Identifying and supporting Carers at this early stage will reduce the likelihood of isolation, poor health and financial difficulties. Hospitals need dedicated workers who can identify Carers looking after patients and have a clear understanding of what is available to support them.
