Hi my name is Nicola and I have been running to support unpaid carers in Derbyshire.

Why did I decide to take on this challenge?

I started partially for fitness reasons and for my own mental health. As time went on, I have found that running can help me to organise my thoughts and process things more easily. I feel much more confident because I have done things that I never thought I would do. In doing this challenge for myself, I also wanted to help raise funds to support carers in Derbyshire.

What are my aims and objectives?

To raise awareness of unpaid carers as I feel they are often overlooked and they do not recognise themselves carers, as they are just supporting a loved one. This often means that carers don’t always access support or are aware of the services available to them.

I am also training for at least a marathon. I think this is a good way to raise awareness as, like caring can be, it is a tough thing to do with enjoyable parts.

Which races in Derbyshire have I entered so far?

I have entered a few fell races around Derbyshire. I have been to Stanage Edge, Black Rocks, Parwich, Dovedale, Bakewell, Riber, Beeley Moor, Darley Dale, Holbrook, and Shipley Park. I think my favourite was the Dovedale Dash, which, although wet and muddy, was just so much fun.

What kind of training do I need to do or have I completed?

I have completed training in some really beautiful places, including; Edale, Youlgreave, Alderwasley, South Wingfield and Crich. My furthest is just over (a hilly) 14 miles which was a real challenge. However, I tend to like to stick to off road routes.

I started running in June 2022, joining a club in April 2023 called Rouge Runners who meet in Ripley, although I mostly train independently this has been helpful in my progress.

What have I found most challenging?

Getting through the first few months. Starting this challenge was the hardest part and getting over the fear of other people seeing me. I would get up at 6am and go down a local footpath where I knew no one would be. Keeping out of your own head, and not getting myself down because I’m slower or walked more than I would have liked. It’s very easy to rob yourself of an achievement.

And the hills!

What do I find most enjoyable?

All runs and races have been enjoyable in their own way. I enjoy the open views and technical routes. I think sometimes the most enjoyable part is the proud feeling after, where I can think ‘I really just did that’ and its give me a new appreciation for myself and for my body, and what I can do.

What have been my learning curves?

Many lessons have been learnt. The biggest probably being that you have to look after yourself and that I am cable of more than what I think……

……and the floor is hard!

So far this year, Nicky has covered an impressive 628 miles; gaining 57,392ft in ascent! It’s safe to say we are more than impressed and super proud of Nicky’s achievements. DCA are so lucky to have her on our team.

Nicky, we can’t wait to cheer you on continuing this journey and any challenge you take on whilst waving the banner for our carers!

Well done, we’re super proud of you!
