Children in Need Projects
We are very fortunate enough to be funded by Children in Need for the following Young Carer projects
Mental Health Support Project
Our specialist Mental Health Support Worker looks after families where the main caring issue is a mental health difficulty. They spend time working with these families to help the Young Carer understand the condition and to build coping strategies when times are more challenging.
They also work with Young Carers in supporting their own mental health and building resilience.
Every family and Young Carer is contacted/supported at least once every two weeks. The sessions are mainly 1-2-1 in a school environment but also include; family sessions and support to parents within the family home and via telephone calls. Sessions last between 45 minutes to 1 hour
(Due to Covid19, these are currently carried out via telephone calls and online sessions)
Social isolation is a primary issue for the majority of the young carers supported by the project. They struggle to leave their parents due to anxieties around their mental health. They also face financial strains and can feel that they don’t have enough time to meet friends and socialise.
Through this project, young carers have had the opportunity to meet other young carers at our local forums, they’ve been supported with attending local sports clubs, joining fitness groups at gyms, attending after school club activities along with attending young carer’s activities during the school holidays.
This project will provide 20 Netbooks to Young Carers who have been isolated due to Covid-19.
The activities will allow these young people to feel digitally included and have access to online school activities and workbooks.
In researching the need for this funding; we found that some Young Carers didn’t have access to internet, some didn’t own a device to access the school resources they needed during lockdown and some were trying to access workbooks via their mobile phones - which they couldn’t read very clearly or work from.
These netbooks will be of huge benefit to our Young Carers, not only for their education but to stay connected to our team here at Derbyshire Carers Association.
