If the person you care for is unable to manage their own finances or welfare benefits because they are severely disabled or have mentally incapable, then you can apply to be their appointee.

As an appointee, you will be responsible for making sure welfare benefits are applied for accurately, received in a separate bank account and used to support the person with care needs. You would also be responsible for managing the person with care needs finances, paying their bills and making decisions about how best the money is spent.

Only one person can apply to be someone’s appointee and they can be a friend or family member or be a representative of an organisation.
